564 Runners Cross MyWay Mobile Storage Finish Line at 6th Annual Carnegie Volunteer Fire Department 5k Raising $15,000
Under ideal conditions–sunny skies and cool breezes—564 racers crossed the finish line Saturday in the 6th Annual Carnegie Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) 5k Race/Walk. The event’s organizer, Chief Harbin of the Carnegie Police Department noted, “This is the largest group of participants ever. Considering we had around 150 the first year, the Race has certainly grown into what I hoped it would become six years ago, a true ‘Community Event’ that raises money for the Fire Department, while encouraging physical fitness and community spirit.”
The Carlynton School District helped promote the event in a new partnership to encourage the student body with physical fitness and community involvement. This was truly a community event with a wide range of participants from serious runners tuning up for the Pittsburgh Marathon to families walking dogs and pushing strollers.
This 5k Race/Walk was Chief Harbin’s last before he retires from the Carnegie Police Department at the end of December. Over the last six years, Chief Harbin’s efforts along with numerous volunteers’ hard work have raised nearly $70,000 for the Carnegie VFD.
The event started early with coffee provided by the MyWay Mobile Storage “coffee wagon,” as Chief Harbin calls it. Storage containers from MyWay Mobile Storage of Pittsburgh marked the finish line Participants young and old enjoyed music, pre- and post-race massages and refreshments, along with an event T-shirt.
Chief Harbin says he is confident that the event will continue for many years to come. “I may be leaving, but don’t be surprised to see me back here on April 26th, 2014 running in the 7th Annual Carnegie Volunteer Fire Department 5k Run/Walk!”
